REVIEWED OVERVIEW

Hebrews 3 Overview

Hebrews compares Jesus with Moses: both are faithful, but Christ is worthy of greater glory as the Son over God’s house rather than merely a servant in it. The chapter then uses Israel’s wilderness unbelief as a warning, repeatedly urging believers to hear God’s voice ‘to day’ and not harden their hearts.

Before you read Hebrews 3

Coming from

Because the message spoken by angels was steadfast, Hebrews warns readers not to neglect so great salvation. Jesus was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, tasted death for every man, was made perfect as the captain of salvation through sufferings, and took real human nature so He could destroy the devil’s power of death and become a merciful and faithful high priest.

In this chapter

Hebrews compares Jesus with Moses: both are faithful, but Christ is worthy of greater glory as the Son over God’s house rather than merely a servant in it. The chapter then uses Israel’s wilderness unbelief as a warning, repeatedly urging believers to hear God’s voice ‘to day’ and not harden their hearts.

Leads into

Hebrews continues the theme of entering God’s rest. Israel’s failure does not exhaust the promise; Joshua did not give the ultimate rest, so a rest remains for God’s people. The word of God exposes the heart, and the chapter ends by pointing to Jesus, the great high priest who sympathizes with human weakness and invites believers to come boldly to the throne of grace.

Key understandingExplore deeper

The wilderness generation’s failure centers on unbelief and disobedience in entering God’s rest, not on proving whether every individual was eternally saved or lost.

‘Partakers of Christ’ language belongs to the exhortation context of continuing confidently in the benefits and fellowship of Christ; it should not be used to overturn the letter’s strong assurance texts.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Christ is greater than Moses

Moses is a faithful servant; Christ is Son over the house.

Unbelief hardens and deprives people of promised rest

Israel’s wilderness history becomes a serious warning.

Mutual exhortation matters

Believers are to exhort one another daily against sin’s deceitfulness.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Numbers 14

Israel’s refusal to enter Canaan supplies the historical warning.

Psalm 95:7–11

Hebrews quotes the psalm’s ‘to day’ warning.

1 Corinthians 10:1–12

Paul also uses the wilderness generation as a warning to believers.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Do not equate Canaan rest automatically with heaven

Israel could fail to enter Canaan without the text turning Canaan into eternal life itself.

Do not make perseverance a work that purchases salvation

The warning calls believers to faithful confidence and participation.

Do not miss the corporate command to exhort one another

The chapter makes mutual encouragement part of resisting hardening through sin’s deceitfulness.

Chapter outline3 sections
1-6Jesus is greater than Moses and faithful over God’s house7-11The Holy Ghost warns against hardening the heart as Israel did in the wilderness12-19Believers are warned against an evil heart of unbelief and reminded why Israel could not enter
1

Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

2

Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.

3

For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.

4

For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.

5

And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;

6

But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

7

Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

8

Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

9

When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.

10

Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.

11

So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)

12

Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

13

But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

14

For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

15

While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

16

For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.

17

But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?

18

And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?

19

So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
