REVIEWED OVERVIEW

Hebrews 8 Overview

Hebrews declares that believers have such a high priest seated at God’s right hand, ministering in the true heavenly sanctuary. Christ is mediator of a better covenant established on better promises. The writer quotes Jeremiah’s new covenant promise and concludes that by calling the covenant new, God made the first old and ready to vanish away.

Before you read Hebrews 8

Coming from

Hebrews develops Melchisedec’s significance and argues that Jesus belongs to a better priesthood than the Levitical order. A change of priesthood implies a change of law, and Christ’s priesthood rests on an endless life and divine oath. Unlike mortal priests, Jesus continues forever and is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God by Him because He ever lives to make intercession.

In this chapter

Hebrews declares that believers have such a high priest seated at God’s right hand, ministering in the true heavenly sanctuary. Christ is mediator of a better covenant established on better promises. The writer quotes Jeremiah’s new covenant promise and concludes that by calling the covenant new, God made the first old and ready to vanish away.

Leads into

Hebrews compares the first covenant’s earthly sanctuary and repeated priestly service with Christ’s entrance into the greater heavenly tabernacle by His own blood. Animal blood provided ceremonial cleansing, but Christ’s blood purges the conscience. He appears once in the end of the world to put away sin by His sacrifice and will appear a second time unto salvation for those who look for Him.

Key understandingExplore deeper

The new covenant is explicitly made with the house of Israel and house of Judah in Jeremiah’s wording, while Hebrews applies its benefits through Christ to its readers. Both realities should be respected rather than erasing the named parties.

The chapter teaches covenantal obsolescence of the Mosaic arrangement, not moral chaos.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Christ ministers in the true heavenly sanctuary

Earthly priestly service was patterned after heavenly reality.

The new covenant is better

It rests on better promises and a better mediator.

The old covenant is obsolete

The writer explicitly says the first becomes old in light of the new.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Jeremiah 31:31–34

Hebrews quotes the new covenant promise at length.

Luke 22:20

2 Corinthians 3:6–14

Paul also contrasts old-covenant letter with new-covenant Spirit and fading glory.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Do not erase Israel and Judah from Jeremiah’s stated covenant promise

Hebrews quotes those names explicitly.

Do not use covenant change to justify lawlessness

The new covenant writes God’s laws into heart and mind.

Do not treat earthly sanctuary forms as the final reality

Chapter outline2 sections
1-6Christ ministers as High Priest in the true heavenly sanctuary and has a more excellent ministry7-13The promised new covenant is quoted and shown to make the first covenant old
1

Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;

2

A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

3

For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.

4

For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:

5

Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

6

But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

7

For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

8

For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

9

Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

10

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

11

And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

12

For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

13

In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
