Before you read Hosea 5

Coming from

Hosea 4 laid out the covenant case against the land and emphasized priestly rejection of knowledge. Hosea 5 brings leaders, tribes, and both kingdoms directly under judgment and adds the futility of foreign political rescue.

In this chapter

Priests, the house of Israel, and the royal house are summoned to hear judgment because they have become a snare. Ephraim and Israel are deeply corrupted, Judah is also threatened, and political appeals to Assyria cannot heal them; the LORD withdraws until they acknowledge their offence and seek Him.

Leads into

In response to the LORD’s withdrawal, Israel speaks of returning and being healed, but the next chapter exposes how shallow and short-lived their goodness is and insists that God desires mercy and knowledge more than ritual sacrifice.

Key understandingExplore deeper

The chapter names Ephraim frequently because that dominant northern tribe can stand for the northern kingdom as a whole. Judah is not exempt; boundary-moving and shared corruption bring judgment south as well.

Israel’s appeal to the Assyrian king is condemned because the political alliance treats an imperial power as the healer of a covenant wound that only the LORD can address. Assyria itself will soon become an instrument of judgment.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Religious and political leadership can become a trap

Priests and rulers who should guide the people instead help entrench rebellion.

Human alliances cannot cure a spiritual covenant breach

Assyria may offer political leverage, but it cannot heal the wound created by unfaithfulness to God.

God’s withdrawal is purposeful judgment

The LORD waits until His people acknowledge guilt and genuinely seek Him.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

2 Kings 15–17

The northern kingdom repeatedly appeals to Assyria and becomes entangled with the empire that eventually destroys Samaria.

Isaiah 30–31

Isaiah likewise condemns Judah’s habit of seeking foreign military help instead of trusting the LORD.

Hosea 14:3

The book’s final repentance explicitly rejects Assyria as savior, answering the false dependence exposed here.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Do not read every reference to healing as physical disease.

The wounds are covenantal and national, though bodily imagery communicates their seriousness.

Do not assume God’s temporary withdrawal means He ceases to be sovereign or forgets His promises.

The withdrawal is an active judicial response designed to bring acknowledgement and seeking.

Read Hosea 5 watching for…

Who is summoned to hear the judgment.

The repeated use of Ephraim for the northern kingdom.

Why Judah also comes under warning.

What Israel expects Assyria to do for them.

The purpose stated for the LORD’s withdrawal.

Chapter outline2 sections
1-7Priests, rulers, and Israel are judged because pride and unfaithfulness keep them from returning to God8-15Judgment is sounded against Ephraim and Judah, and human alliances cannot heal their wound
1

Hear ye this, O priests; and hearken, ye house of Israel; and give ye ear, O house of the king; for judgment is toward you, because ye have been a snare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor.

2

And the revolters are profound to make slaughter, though I have been a rebuker of them all.

3

I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me: for now, O Ephraim, thou committest whoredom, and Israel is defiled.

4

They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God: for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the LORD.

5

And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity; Judah also shall fall with them.

6

They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them.

7

They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions.

8

Blow ye the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah: cry aloud at Bethaven, after thee, O Benjamin.

9

Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel have I made known that which shall surely be.

10

The princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound: therefore I will pour out my wrath upon them like water.

11

Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment.

12

Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah as rottenness.

13

When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound.

14

For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him.

15

I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.
