Before you read Joel 3

Coming from

Joel 2 moved from the Day-of-the-LORD alarm to heartfelt return, restoration, the outpouring of the Spirit, cosmic signs, and promised deliverance.

In this chapter

The focus shifts to the nations. The LORD judges them for scattering His people, dividing His land, trafficking people, and celebrating Judah’s ruin; then Zion is pictured as holy, secure, fruitful, and cleansed.

Leads into

Joel ends with the LORD dwelling in Zion. Amos follows canonically by announcing the LORD roaring from Zion and judging surrounding nations before turning the accusation directly against Israel.

Key understandingExplore deeper

The valley of Jehoshaphat functions as the scene of divine judgment; the name itself means that the LORD judges. The exact geographical identification and the relation of every detail to later prophetic texts are debated, so the overview should preserve what Joel clearly states without inventing a map.

The nations are judged for concrete historical evil against the LORD’s people—scattering, dividing the land, slave trafficking, plunder, and violence. The final restoration language reverses humiliation and presents the LORD Himself as Zion’s security.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

God holds nations accountable for violence and exploitation

The LORD brings the nations into judgment for what they did to His people and land.

Human power does not control the final outcome

The nations gather for conflict, but the decisive reality is that the LORD sits to judge.

The Day of the LORD is both terror and refuge

Heaven and earth shake, yet the LORD is the hope and strength of His people.

Restoration includes holiness, abundance, and divine presence

The chapter ends not merely with enemies defeated but with Zion holy, fruitful, cleansed, and inhabited by the LORD.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Isaiah 2:1–4

Isaiah also looks to Zion in the latter days, though with emphasis on the nations coming to learn the LORD’s ways rather than Joel’s judgment scene.

Zechariah 14

Zechariah likewise joins a gathering of nations against Jerusalem with the LORD’s decisive intervention and the holiness of Jerusalem.

Revelation 14:14–20

The harvest and winepress imagery of final judgment strongly echoes Joel’s command to put in the sickle because the harvest is ripe.

Amos 1:2

The next prophetic book opens with the LORD roaring from Zion, linking canonically with Joel’s closing emphasis on Zion and judgment.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Do not identify the valley of Jehoshaphat with absolute geographical certainty where Scripture does not.

The text clearly presents a divinely appointed judgment scene; proposed modern locations should remain secondary.

Do not turn judgment on the nations into ethnic hatred.

The LORD judges specific wicked acts and sovereignly administers justice; private vengeance is not authorized.

Do not erase Israel/Judah from the restoration language.

Joel names Judah, Jerusalem, Zion, and the LORD’s land directly; later application should not cancel the historical referents.

Do not make every prophetic detail depend on one speculative end-times timetable.

The clear truths—judgment, restoration, holiness, and the LORD’s presence—should govern uncertain sequencing questions.

Read Joel 3 watching for…

The reasons the LORD gives for judging the nations.

The reversal of humiliation and trafficking.

The harvest and winepress imagery of judgment.

The contrast between cosmic shaking and the LORD as His people’s hope.

The movement from judgment to abundance, holiness, and cleansing.

The final reason for Zion’s security: the LORD dwells there.

Chapter outline3 sections
1-8The LORD gathers nations for judgment because they scattered Israel and trafficked the people and treasures of Judah9-17The nations are summoned to the valley of judgment, where the day of the LORD comes and the LORD is his people’s refuge18-21Judah and Jerusalem are promised enduring blessing while Egypt and Edom face desolation
1

For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,

2

I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.

3

And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.

4

Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine? will ye render me a recompence? and if ye recompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompence upon your own head;

5

Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things:

6

The children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them far from their border.

7

Behold, I will raise them out of the place whither ye have sold them, and will return your recompence upon your own head:

8

And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans, to a people far off: for the LORD hath spoken it.

9

Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up:

10

Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.

11

Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.

12

Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.

13

Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great.

14

Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

15

The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

16

The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

17

So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.

18

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim.

19

Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.

20

But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.

21

For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for the LORD dwelleth in Zion.
