Joshua 14 Overview
The western land distribution begins by lot under Eleazar, Joshua, and the tribal leaders. Caleb then approaches Joshua and recalls the promise made forty-five years earlier after he wholly followed the LORD at Kadesh-barnea. At eighty-five years old, Caleb asks for the hill country around Hebron, including the Anakim, and Joshua gives it to him.

Key understandingExplore deeper
Caleb’s story reaches back to Numbers 13–14. He does not claim Hebron because he is stronger by natural right but because Moses swore that the land his foot had trodden would become his inheritance. His statement that he remains strong at eighty-five emphasizes God’s preservation for the task, not a universal promise that every faithful person will retain identical physical strength in old age.
Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

God can fulfill a promise after decades of delay without the promise becoming less certain.

Truth 3
Inheritance is distributed through recognized covenant leadership and lots, not private seizure.
Truth 4
Faithful service over time does not remove the need for present courage and action.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper
Keep this clear 1
Do not treat Caleb’s physical vigor as a guaranteed reward formula for every believer.
Keep this clear 2
Caleb’s request is not selfish land-grabbing; it rests on a specific earlier promise recognized by Joshua.
Keep this clear 3
The phrase 'wholly followed the LORD' belongs to Caleb’s conduct in the Kadesh crisis; do not turn it into a claim that Caleb was sinlessly perfect.
