REVIEWED OVERVIEW

Mark 16 Overview

Women come to the tomb and find the stone rolled away. A young man announces that Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified, is risen and directs them to tell the disciples and Peter that He will go before them into Galilee. Jesus appears to followers, rebukes unbelief, commissions the preaching of the gospel to every creature, associates baptism with believing disciples, promises accompanying signs, ascends into heaven, and the disciples go forth preaching with the Lord working with them.

Before you read Mark 16

Coming from

Mark 15 established the immediate context: Jesus is brought before Pilate, and the crowd chooses Barabbas.

In this chapter

Mark ends with resurrection, restored mission, worldwide gospel proclamation, obedient baptism, apostolic signs, ascension, and the risen Lord continuing to work through His messengers.

Leads into

Luke follows canonically with an orderly account written from researched testimony, beginning before Jesus’ birth with the announcements concerning John the Baptist and Jesus.

Key understandingExplore deeper

The KJV text includes Mark 16:9–20, and this overview treats the received KJV passage as part of the chapter rather than bracketing it away.

Verse 16 states that the one who believes and is baptized shall be saved, while condemnation is tied explicitly to not believing. In the wider New Testament, baptism follows faith as commanded identification; it is not an additional work required to make faith sufficient for eternal life.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Jesus truly rose after crucifixion

The tomb is empty and He appears to multiple followers.

Failure does not end the disciples’ mission

Peter is named specifically in the resurrection message, and unbelieving disciples are corrected then commissioned.

The gospel is for every creature

Mark’s rapid story expands into worldwide proclamation.

Baptism belongs with believing disciples

It is an expected public response to the gospel.

The risen Lord continues working with His messengers

The closing emphasis is not human mission alone but divine confirmation and cooperation.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Matthew 28:18–20

Matthew’s Great Commission likewise joins worldwide disciple-making, baptism, teaching, and Christ’s presence.

Acts 1:8–11

Acts records worldwide witness, Jesus’ ascension, and apostolic mission.

Acts 2:38–41

Those receiving the word are baptized as part of the earliest church’s response pattern.

John 3:16–18

John states the saving/condemning issue directly in terms of belief and unbelief, clarifying Mark 16:16.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Do not teach baptismal regeneration from verse 16

The verse itself makes unbelief the ground of condemnation, and the New Testament consistently teaches eternal life through faith in Christ.

Do not turn apostolic sign promises into a command to handle snakes or drink poison

The text describes signs accompanying the apostolic mission, not reckless testing of God.

Do not let the disciples’ earlier unbelief obscure restoration

The risen Christ rebukes them and still sends them.

Read Mark 16 watching for…

The women’s concern and what they find.

The specific mention of Peter.

The disciples’ struggle to believe resurrection testimony.

The worldwide scope of the commission.

The relation of belief, baptism, salvation, and unbelief.

The ascension and the Lord working with the preaching disciples.

1

And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

2

And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

3

And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

4

And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

5

And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.

6

And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

7

But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

8

And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

9

Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

10

And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.

11

And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

12

After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.

13

And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

14

Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

15

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

17

And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

18

They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

19

So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

20

And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
