Numbers 4 Overview
Numbers 4 assigns transport duties to the Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites and numbers the men from thirty to fifty years old who enter the service. The Kohathites carry the most holy furnishings only after Aaron and his sons cover them; they may not touch or look upon the holy things uncovered. Gershon carries curtains and coverings, while Merari carries boards, bars, pillars, sockets, and related structure. Sacred work is detailed, ordered, and accountable.

Key understandingExplore deeper
This chapter narrows the Levitical census to men assigned to active transport service. Aaron and his sons first cover the holy furnishings; only then may the Kohathites carry them, and the Kohathites are forbidden to touch the holy things directly or enter to watch while they are being covered. Gershon and Merari handle curtains, coverings, boards, bars, pillars, sockets, and related structure. The chapter shows that proximity to holy things does not erase role boundaries: priests prepare, Levites carry, and every clan has accountable work.
