Numbers 6 Overview
Numbers 6 gives the law of the Nazirite and closes with the priestly blessing. A man or woman may voluntarily separate unto the LORD for a period, abstaining from products of the vine, leaving the hair uncut, and avoiding corpse defilement. If accidental defilement occurs, the period must be restarted according to the prescribed offerings. When the vow is completed, sacrifices are offered and the hair is shaved. The chapter then gives Aaron and his sons the well-known blessing invoking the LORD’s blessing, keeping, grace, peace, and name upon Israel.

Key understandingExplore deeper
A Nazirite vow is a voluntary period of special separation that may be taken by a man or a woman. During the vow the person abstains from products of the vine, leaves the hair uncut, and avoids corpse defilement; accidental defilement interrupts the period and requires prescribed cleansing and offerings. The chapter then moves from voluntary separation to the priestly blessing pronounced over Israel. The blessing emphasizes that the LORD himself is the source of keeping, grace, peace, and favor; the words are not a magical formula.
