Before you read Psalms 112

Coming from

Psalm 111 centered on wholehearted praise for god's works and covenant faithfulness. Psalms is an anthology rather than a continuous chronological story, so the connection here is canonical and thematic.

In this chapter

The righteous person delights in God's commandments, acts graciously, lends, is not afraid of evil tidings, gives to the poor, and stands firm while the wicked person's desire perishes.

Leads into

Psalm 113 turns to the exalted lord stoops to raise the lowly, continuing the Psalter’s arranged movement without requiring that the two psalms describe consecutive historical events.

Key understandingExplore deeper

Psalm 112 belongs to Book V of the Psalter (Psalms 107–150). These are wisdom-character patterns, not a promise that every God-fearing person will always possess material wealth or avoid suffering.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Central truth

The blessed life of the person who fears the LORD.

Wisdom truth

In Psalm 112, godly wisdom evaluates life by the LORD’s revealed moral order rather than by appearances alone.

Reading emphasis

Psalm 112 deliberately moves from its opening emphasis on delight commandments to its closing emphasis on given to poor; the whole movement matters.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Wisdom connection

Proverbs 1:7 and 9:10 likewise place true wisdom under the fear of the LORD. This connection helps frame Psalm 112.

Canonical connection

Psalm 112 stands within the Psalter’s wider movement among lament, trust, praise, wisdom, kingship, and remembrance of God’s works.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Keep wisdom in context

Do not turn a wisdom contrast in Psalm 112 into a mechanical formula that guarantees immediate earthly outcomes in every case.

Read the poetry as poetry

Psalm 112 uses compressed poetic language. Do not make every image a literal mechanism or a hidden symbol unless Scripture itself establishes that meaning.

Read Psalms 112 watching for…

delight commandments.

wealth and riches.

light in darkness.

evil tidings not fear.

given to poor.
