Before you read Psalms 115

Coming from

Psalm 114 centered on creation trembles before the god of the exodus. Psalms is an anthology rather than a continuous chronological story, so the connection here is canonical and thematic.

In this chapter

Israel refuses self-glory, contrasts the sovereign God in heaven with man-made idols that cannot see, hear, or act, calls Israel and priests to trust Him, and blesses the LORD as the God of the living community.

Leads into

Psalm 116 turns to love and thanksgiving after deliverance from death, continuing the Psalter’s arranged movement without requiring that the two psalms describe consecutive historical events.

Key understandingExplore deeper

Psalm 115 belongs to Book V of the Psalter (Psalms 107–150). The statement that those who make idols become like them describes spiritual deadness and futility, not a literal physical transformation.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Central truth

Give glory to God, not lifeless idols.

Praise truth

In Psalm 115, praise responds to God’s character and deeds and draws the worshipper beyond self-preoccupation.

Idolatry truth

In Psalm 115, idols are exposed as powerless substitutes for the living and sovereign LORD.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Praise connection

Hebrews 13:15 speaks of offering to God the sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips giving thanks to His name. This connection helps frame Psalm 115.

Idolatry connection

Isaiah 44:9-20 exposes the absurdity of making and worshipping a powerless idol. This connection helps frame Psalm 115.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Keep praise in context

The praise practices in Psalm 115 show the breadth of Israel’s worship; not every listed physical expression becomes a universal church requirement.

Keep idolatry in context

The idol language in Psalm 115 condemns false worship; it should not be used as a pretext for mocking people who need truth and mercy.

Read Psalms 115 watching for…

not unto us.

God in heavens.

idols silver gold.

trust O Israel.

dead praise not.

1

Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake.

2

Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God?

3

But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

4

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.

5

They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not:

6

They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not:

7

They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.

8

They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.

9

O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.

10

O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.

11

Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.

12

The LORD hath been mindful of us: he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron.

13

He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.

14

The LORD shall increase you more and more, you and your children.

15

Ye are blessed of the LORD which made heaven and earth.

16

The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD's: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.

17

The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.

18

But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD.
