Before you read Psalms 132

Coming from

Psalm 131 centered on a quieted soul like a weaned child. Psalms is an anthology rather than a continuous chronological story, so the connection here is canonical and thematic.

In this chapter

The psalm remembers David's zeal to find a dwelling for the ark, recounts worship around the ark, appeals to God's covenant with David, and celebrates Zion as God's chosen resting place where David's horn will grow.

Leads into

Psalm 133 turns to the goodness of brethren dwelling together in unity, continuing the Psalter’s arranged movement without requiring that the two psalms describe consecutive historical events.

Key understandingExplore deeper

Psalm 132 belongs to Book V of the Psalter (Psalms 107–150). The psalm joins temple/Zion promises and Davidic kingship; later messianic fulfillment should be recognized without making every detail a direct prediction of the church.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Central truth

David's vow, Zion's election, and the promised Davidic horn.

Pilgrimage truth

In Psalm 132, approaching worship becomes a setting for dependence, memory, community, and hope.

Covenant truth

In Psalm 132, god’s covenant faithfulness remains the standard even when His people are unstable or disobedient.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Acts 2:30

Peter speaks of God’s oath to David concerning the fruit of his loins and the Messiah’s throne, echoing the Davidic oath celebrated in this psalm.

Pilgrimage connection

The Songs of degrees, Psalms 120–134, turn the movement toward worship into sustained spiritual instruction. This connection helps frame Psalm 132.

Covenant connection

Exodus 34:6-7 reveals the LORD’s merciful yet just covenant character. This connection helps frame Psalm 132.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Keep pilgrimage in context

The Songs of degrees have a real Israelite worship setting; do not turn every travel image in Psalm 132 into a required allegorical stage of Christian growth.

Keep covenant in context

Do not confuse covenant blessing or chastening in Psalm 132 with a works-based condition for receiving eternal life.

Read Psalms 132 watching for…

David afflictions.

find place LORD.

ark of strength.

covenant David.

horn bud David.

1

A Song of degrees.LORD, remember David, and all his afflictions:

2

How he sware unto the LORD, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob;

3

Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;

4

I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids,

5

Until I find out a place for the LORD, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.

6

Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah: we found it in the fields of the wood.

7

We will go into his tabernacles: we will worship at his footstool.

8

Arise, O LORD, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength.

9

Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints shout for joy.

10

For thy servant David's sake turn not away the face of thine anointed.

11

The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.

12

If thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne for evermore.

13

For the LORD hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation.

14

This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

15

I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.

16

I will also clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.

17

There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.

18

His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.
