Before you read Psalms 75

Coming from

Psalm 74 centered on lament over a devastated sanctuary. Psalms is an anthology rather than a continuous chronological story, so the connection here is canonical and thematic.

In this chapter

The congregation gives thanks; God announces that He will judge uprightly, warns the proud not to lift their horn, and declares that promotion comes neither east nor west but from the Judge.

Leads into

Psalm 76 turns to god's terrifying victory protects zion, continuing the Psalter’s arranged movement without requiring that the two psalms describe consecutive historical events.

Key understandingExplore deeper

Psalm 75 belongs to Book III of the Psalter (Psalms 73–89). The “cup” of judgment is poetic imagery later used widely in the Prophets and New Testament.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

Central truth

God alone decides who is raised or brought low.

Judgment truth

In Psalm 75, moral judgment finally belongs to God, who sees what human courts and observers may miss.

Praise truth

In Psalm 75, praise responds to God’s character and deeds and draws the worshipper beyond self-preoccupation.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Judgment connection

Romans 12:19 likewise tells believers not to avenge themselves but to leave vengeance with God. This connection helps frame Psalm 75.

Praise connection

1 Chronicles 16 provides a major Old Testament model of public praise for God’s works. This connection helps frame Psalm 75.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Keep judgment in context

Distinguish the temporal, national, and judicial settings in Psalm 75 from final eternal judgment where the text itself does not equate them.

Keep praise in context

The praise practices in Psalm 75 show the breadth of Israel’s worship; not every listed physical expression becomes a universal church requirement.
