Start with the big picture.
Amos is a shepherd and gatherer of sycomore fruit whom the LORD sends from Judah to prophesy chiefly against the northern kingdom of Israel. The book condemns oppression, corrupt courts, sexual sin, luxurious indifference, idolatrous worship, and religious ceremonies disconnected from righteousness. A series of visions shows judgment becoming unavoidable, yet the final verses promise restoration of David’s fallen tabernacle and renewed blessing.
