What is happening here?
Amos confronts Samaria’s wealthy “kine of Bashan” for oppressing the poor while demanding luxury, sarcastically invites Israel to keep multiplying transgression at Bethel and Gilgal, and rehearses famine, drought, crop disease, plague, and overthrow—each followed by the refrain, “yet have ye not returned unto me.” The chapter ends: “prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.”
