Start with the big picture.
John presents Jesus Christ as the eternal Word made flesh, the Son sent from the Father, the Lamb of God, Messiah, giver of living water and eternal life, good shepherd, resurrection and life, way, truth, and life, and risen Lord. The Gospel is explicitly written so readers may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and by believing have life through his name. Signs, extended discourses, personal encounters, conflict, the upper-room teaching, crucifixion, resurrection, and restored discipleship all serve that purpose.
