REVIEWED OVERVIEW

Titus 2 Overview

Paul tells Titus what conduct fits sound doctrine among aged men, aged women, younger women, younger men, and servants. Titus himself must model good works and sound speech. The chapter then grounds Christian living in grace: the grace of God that brings salvation teaches believers to deny ungodliness, live soberly, and look for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of Jesus Christ.

Before you read Titus 2

Coming from

Paul leaves Titus in Crete to set churches in order and appoint elders in every city. He lists qualifications centered on blameless character, faithful household leadership, self-control, hospitality, sound doctrine, and ability to answer gainsayers. He then warns about vain talkers, deceivers, and teachers whose profession is contradicted by corrupt works.

In this chapter

Paul tells Titus what conduct fits sound doctrine among aged men, aged women, younger women, younger men, and servants. Titus himself must model good works and sound speech. The chapter then grounds Christian living in grace: the grace of God that brings salvation teaches believers to deny ungodliness, live soberly, and look for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of Jesus Christ.

Leads into

Paul tells believers to be subject to lawful authority, ready for good works, gentle, and humble because they too were once foolish and enslaved to lusts. Salvation came not by works of righteousness they had done, but according to God’s mercy through washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost. Good works then follow as profitable Christian conduct.

Key understandingExplore deeper

Grace is not opposed to godly living; grace saves and then teaches saved people how to live.

Verse 13 directly calls Jesus Christ ‘the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ,’ a strong affirmation of His deity.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Do not turn grace’s teaching work into a works-salvation formula

The chapter says grace brings salvation before it teaches conduct.

Do not weaken Christ’s deity in verse 13

The text identifies Him as the great God and Saviour.

Do not use role-specific exhortations to imply unequal spiritual worth

1-10Titus is told to teach sound conduct to older men, older women, younger women, younger men, and servants11-15The grace of God teaches believers to deny ungodliness, live godly lives, and look for Christ’s glorious appearing
1

But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

2

That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

3

The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

4

That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

5

To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

6

Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.

7

In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,

8

Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

9

Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;

10

Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

11

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

12

Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

13

Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

14

Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

15

These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
