Zechariah 6 Overview

The final night vision shows four chariots emerging between mountains of brass and going into the earth as the LORD’s agents. Zechariah then performs a symbolic crowning: silver and gold from returned exiles are made into crowns placed on Joshua the high priest, while the prophet announces the Branch who will build the temple of the LORD, bear glory, rule, and unite royal and priestly themes in peace.

Before you read Zechariah 6

Coming from

Zechariah 5 portrayed the restored community being cleansed through judgment on covenant sin and removal of wickedness.

In this chapter

The eighth vision completes the worldwide patrol/judgment theme, after which a symbolic act with Joshua points beyond the present high priest toward the Branch.

Leads into

Zechariah 7 moves several years forward. A delegation asks whether traditional fasts for Jerusalem’s destruction should continue, and the LORD answers by exposing self-centered religion and recalling the ethical demands the fathers refused.

Key understandingExplore deeper

The chariots are called the four spirits/winds of the heavens going forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth. Their exact historical referents are less important than their function as divinely commissioned agents moving through the world.

Joshua’s crowning is deliberately striking because he is a priest, not the Davidic king. The oracle then shifts to “the man whose name is The BRANCH,” indicating that the symbolic act points beyond Joshua toward a figure who joins temple-building, glory, rule, and priestly counsel.

Major truths in this chapterExplore deeper

The LORD governs beyond Jerusalem

The chariots go into the earth under the authority of the Lord of all the earth.

Priestly and royal hope converge in the Branch

The symbolic crown on Joshua points toward a greater figure who will rule and build.

God’s future temple promise exceeds the immediate project

Zerubbabel’s temple is being built, yet the Branch is also said to build the temple of the LORD.

Distant people can participate in God’s work

Those from far away are pictured coming and building in the LORD’s temple.

Connections to the rest of ScriptureExplore deeper

Jeremiah 23:5–6

Jeremiah’s Branch is a righteous Davidic king, strengthening the royal dimension of Zechariah’s title.

Psalm 110:1–4

The psalm joins kingship and priesthood in one exalted figure, a combination that resonates strongly with Zechariah 6.

Hebrews 7

Hebrews develops Christ as both priest and royal Son in a priesthood not limited to the ordinary Levitical pattern.

Ephesians 2:19–22

The New Testament later speaks of a temple made of people built together for God’s habitation, showing how temple imagery develops beyond one structure.

What is clear, and where care is neededExplore deeper

Do not assume Joshua himself becomes the permanent Davidic king

The crowning is symbolic and immediately points to the Branch.

Do not force the four chariot colors into a detailed modern prophecy chart

Their divine commission and worldwide movement are clear; exact identifications remain debated.

Do not erase the immediate post-exilic temple context while seeing messianic significance

Zechariah speaks into a real rebuilding project while pointing beyond it.

Read Zechariah 6 watching for…

The origin and destinations of the four chariots.

The title “Lord of all the earth.”

The unusual act of crowning Joshua the high priest.

Everything said about the Branch.

The joining of priestly and ruling language.

The promise that those far off will help build.

1-8Four chariots go out from between mountains of brass to execute the LORD’s purposes in the earth9-15Joshua is crowned as a sign of the Branch who will build the temple and rule as priest and king
1

And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass.

2

In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses;

3

And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses.

4

Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord?

5

And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.

6

The black horses which are therein go forth into the north country; and the white go forth after them; and the grisled go forth toward the south country.

7

And the bay went forth, and sought to go that they might walk to and fro through the earth: and he said, Get you hence, walk to and fro through the earth. So they walked to and fro through the earth.

8

Then cried he upon me, and spake unto me, saying, Behold, these that go toward the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.

9

And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

10

Take of them of the captivity, even of Heldai, of Tobijah, and of Jedaiah, which are come from Babylon, and come thou the same day, and go into the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah;

11

Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest;

12

And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:

13

Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

14

And the crowns shall be to Helem, and to Tobijah, and to Jedaiah, and to Hen the son of Zephaniah, for a memorial in the temple of the LORD.

15

And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the LORD, and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you. And this shall come to pass, if ye will diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God.
