LESSON 3 OF 18

Access to God Through Jesus Christ

18 min Foundations of Prayer 3 Quick Checks
Lesson purpose

Christian prayer is not vague spirituality. The believer comes to the Father through Jesus Christ, the one mediator between God and men.

In this lesson

  • Read the primary Bible passages carefully and in context.
  • Compare Scripture with Scripture before drawing the conclusion.
  • State the main truth in plain words you could explain to someone else.
  • Complete the Quick Checks and guided study before moving on.

Christ is the way to the Father

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Prayer is not an attempt to climb toward God by sincerity. Our access rests on Christ. He is not one mediator among many. Scripture says there is one mediator.

?
QUICK CHECKAccording to 1 Timothy 2:5, how many mediators are there between God and men?

Come by the blood of Jesus

Hebrews 10:19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

Hebrews 10:20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

Hebrews 10:21 And having an high priest over the house of God;

Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

The believer's confidence is not, “I have been good enough today, so God should hear me.” Our confidence is Christ. The same gospel that saves us also gives us access to draw near.

?
QUICK CHECKHebrews 10:19 says believers have boldness to enter the holiest by what?

Prayer grows from relationship, not merit

A saved person may have had a terrible day. He may need correction, confession, and restored fellowship, but he does not stop being God's child every time he fails. Eternal security gives prayer stability: we come as children who need our Father, not as strangers trying to earn admission again.

This does not make sin unimportant. It makes grace precious. We come honestly because Christ is enough.

?
QUICK CHECKA believer must become God’s child again after every failure before he can pray.

FOUNDATIONS MASTERY

Compare Scripture with Scripture

Scripture trail: John 14:6 • 1 Timothy 2:5 • Hebrews 10:19 • Hebrews 10:20 • Hebrews 10:21 • Hebrews 10:22 • John 14:6, 1 Timothy 2:5, Hebrews 10:19, Hebrews 10:20 • Matthew 6:6-13

Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.

Think it through

  1. What does the passage teach about God, the believer, and the proper content or attitude of prayer?
  2. How does this truth shape prayer without turning prayer into a saving work or a technique for controlling God?
  3. How could you pray this truth back to God in your own words today?

Teach it back

Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize Access to God Through Jesus Christ in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.

STUDY IT FOR YOURSELF

Slow down and work the text

Reopen John 14:6, 1 Timothy 2:5, Hebrews 10:19, Hebrews 10:20. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.

  1. Write the main claim of Access to God Through Jesus Christ in one sentence.
  2. Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
  3. Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
  4. Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
  5. Turn one truth from the lesson into a short, Bible-shaped prayer to God.
Before you continue

  • What does this lesson teach about God and prayer?
  • How should this truth affect the way you pray?
  • What mistaken idea about prayer does the Scripture correct?
KEY TRUTH

Our access to God rests on Jesus Christ, not on our daily performance. We draw near because Christ is our mediator and high priest.
