1 Chronicles 24 Overview
David, Zadok, and Ahimelech divide Aaron’s descendants into twenty-four priestly courses because some family branches are larger than others. Lots determine the order of service so that assignments are distributed without favoritism. The latter part of the chapter records additional Levitical family heads. The result is an organized rotation for temple ministry.

Key understandingExplore deeper
The priestly courses create a rotation rather than requiring every priest to serve at the temple continuously. The use of lots expresses an orderly means of assigning service among recognized priestly families. These divisions later remain important enough that Luke identifies Zacharias by his course.

The casting of lots in this covenant setting does not command Christians to use random selection for every ministry decision.
