Numbers 18 Overview
Numbers 18 defines the duties and support of priests and Levites after the priesthood controversies. Aaron and his sons bear responsibility for the sanctuary and priesthood, while Levites assist but may not approach priestly vessels and altar functions. Portions of offerings, firstfruits, firstborn redemption, and tithes support sacred service. Levites themselves give a tithe of the tithe to the priests. Privilege, responsibility, boundaries, and provision are all carefully ordered.

Key understandingExplore deeper
The confirmation of Aaron's priesthood is followed by an explanation of its responsibilities and support. Priests bear responsibility for priestly and sanctuary duties; Levites assist them but may not cross into priestly functions. Because priests and Levites do not receive a normal territorial inheritance like the other tribes, portions of offerings, firstfruits, redemption payments, and tithes sustain their service. Levites in turn give a tenth of the tithe they receive to the priests. The chapter joins privilege with accountability and provision with clear boundaries.
