Why the Trinity Matters
Understand why the Trinity is not an optional puzzle but a truth woven through God’s identity, the gospel, baptism, prayer, and worship.
- Start with Scripture instead of illustrations.
- Hold together one God and real personal distinction.
- See why errors about the Trinity distort other doctrines.
One God, yet Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are named
Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
The Bible never asks us to choose between monotheism and the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Deuteronomy declares one LORD; Jesus commands baptism in the singular “name” of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. A sound doctrine must preserve both truths.
The word Trinity is useful shorthand, but the authority is the text. We are not saved by mastering a theological label; eternal life is received by believing on Jesus Christ.
The gospel has a Trinitarian shape
1 Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
Ephesians 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
Peter names the foreknowledge of the Father, sanctification of the Spirit, and the blood of Jesus Christ. Paul describes access to the Father through Christ by one Spirit. The one God works harmoniously in salvation.
This does not create three plans of salvation. It reveals one divine saving purpose carried out in personally distinct relationships.
Doctrine protects worship
2 Corinthians 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.
1 John 2:23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
Paul blesses the church with the grace of Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost. John warns that denial of the Son destroys a true confession of the Father.
The course will therefore reject three opposite distortions: three gods, one Person merely changing masks, and a created or lesser Son and Spirit.
- Why is “one God” not enough if someone then denies what Scripture says about the Son or Holy Ghost?
- Why must a doctrine be built from many passages rather than one slogan?
Work the Scriptures
Read Matthew 28:18–20, 2 Corinthians 13:14, Ephesians 2:13–18, and 1 Peter 1:1–2. Make three columns—Father, Son, Holy Ghost—and record what each text says. Then explain why these texts do not teach three gods.
The Trinity is the biblical truth that there is one God while Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are truly distinct and revealed as divine.
