LESSON 1 OF 20

Study to Shew Thyself Approved

20 min How to Approach the Bible 3 Quick Checks
Lesson purpose

God did not give you the Bible merely to own, quote occasionally, or hear someone else explain. He gave Scripture so you can read it, search it, understand it, believe it, obey it, and become able to handle it faithfully.

In this lesson

  • See why Bible study is a Christian responsibility.
  • Distinguish reading from careful study.
  • Learn the attitude of a good Bible student.
  • Build a foundation for every lesson that follows.

Study requires work

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The Bible describes the student as a workman. A workman pays attention, learns how the material fits together, uses tools correctly, and refuses careless shortcuts. Bible study is not about finding a clever thought. It is about handling the word of truth in a way that does not leave us ashamed before God.

Reading tells you what is on the page. Study slows down and asks why the words are there, how the sentences connect, who is speaking, who is being addressed, what came before, what comes after, and what other Scriptures say about the same subject.

All Scripture is profitable

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2 Timothy 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Every part of Scripture matters. Some passages give doctrine. Some expose error. Some correct our thinking or conduct. Some instruct us how to live. The goal is maturity: to be furnished for the work God gives us.

A strong Bible student therefore does not live on favorite verses alone. He learns the whole Bible. He reads Genesis and Romans, Psalms and the prophets, the Gospels and the epistles. Over time the pieces begin to connect.

QUICK CHECKThe Bereans were praised for receiving teaching readily and searching the Scriptures daily to verify it.

The Bereans checked preaching against Scripture

Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

The Bereans did two things that belong together: they received teaching with readiness, and they searched Scripture to verify it. Mature learning is neither cynical nor gullible. It listens carefully and checks carefully.

That includes checking pastors, teachers, books, videos, course lessons, and your own ideas. The Bible is the authority. Good teachers help you see what is in the text; they do not become a replacement for the text.

FOUNDATIONS MASTERY

Compare Scripture with Scripture

Scripture trail: 2 Timothy 2:15 • 2 Timothy 3:16 • 2 Timothy 3:17 • Acts 17:11 • 2 Timothy 2:15, 2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Timothy 3:17, Acts 17:11 • Nehemiah 8:8 • 1 Corinthians 2:13 • 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.

Think it through

  1. Who is speaking, who is being addressed, and what question or problem is the passage answering?
  2. What becomes clearer when the passages are compared instead of read as isolated slogans?
  3. Which conclusion is explicitly supported by the text, and which possible conclusion would go beyond what the text says?

Teach it back

Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize Study to Shew Thyself Approved in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.

STUDY IT FOR YOURSELF

Slow down and work the text

Reopen 2 Timothy 2:15, 2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Timothy 3:17, Acts 17:11. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.

  1. Write the main claim of Study to Shew Thyself Approved in one sentence.
  2. Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
  3. Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
  4. Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
  5. Write your observations before consulting notes or commentary, then state the conclusion the text itself supports.
Before you continue

  • What does the passage state explicitly?
  • What context or comparison keeps the interpretation accurate?
  • What conclusion can you defend directly from the text?
KEY TRUTH

A good Bible student is teachable, careful, patient, and willing to do the work of reading the text in context and comparing Scripture with Scripture.
