Start with the big picture.
Zechariah combines calls to return to the LORD, night visions, symbolic acts, questions about fasting, and far-reaching prophecies concerning Jerusalem, the priesthood, the Branch, the coming King, rejected shepherding, the pierced one, the day of the LORD, and final holiness. Written in the post-exilic rebuilding period, the book encourages a small restored community by showing that God’s purposes for Jerusalem, his covenant people, and his coming ruler extend far beyond their immediate weakness.
