LESSON 11 OF 12

Baptism, the Local Church, and Christian Growth

17 min Clarity, Church, and Your Next Step 3 Quick Checks
Lesson purpose

Baptism is not a finish line. In Acts, baptized believers were added to the church and continued in doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayers.

In this lesson

  • Read the primary Bible passages carefully and in context.
  • Compare Scripture with Scripture before drawing the conclusion.
  • State the main truth in plain words you could explain to someone else.
  • Complete the Quick Checks and guided study before moving on.

Received the word, baptized, added, continued

Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Acts 2 gives a healthy sequence for Christian life. People received the Word, were baptized, were added, and then continued. Baptism did not end their discipleship; it visibly placed them into a life of learning and fellowship.

?
QUICK CHECKMatthew 28:20 shows that teaching believers to observe Christ’s commands continues after baptism.

Baptism opens a life of discipleship

Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

After baptism comes continued teaching. A baptized believer should grow in Bible reading, prayer, doctrine, church faithfulness, service, giving, soul winning, and practical obedience.

The local church gives baptism a visible home

In the New Testament, baptism is connected to an identifiable body of believers. It is not merely a private spiritual moment. It is public identification with Christ among His people.

That makes baptism a natural doorway into accountable Christian growth: you have publicly said that you belong to Christ, and now you learn to live as His disciple alongside other believers.

FOUNDATIONS MASTERY

Compare Scripture with Scripture

Scripture trail: Acts 2:41 • Acts 2:42 • Matthew 28:19 • Matthew 28:20 • Acts 2:41, Acts 2:42, Matthew 28:19, Matthew 28:20 • Matthew 28:19-20 • Acts 8:36-39 • Acts 10:43-48

Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.

Think it through

  1. What happens before water baptism in the passages, and what happens after it?
  2. What does baptism picture or publicly identify without making the water the cause of salvation?
  3. How would you explain both truths strongly: baptism matters greatly, and baptism does not purchase eternal life?

Teach it back

Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize Baptism, the Local Church, and Christian Growth in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.

STUDY IT FOR YOURSELF

Slow down and work the text

Reopen Acts 2:41, Acts 2:42, Matthew 28:19, Matthew 28:20. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.

  1. Write the main claim of Baptism, the Local Church, and Christian Growth in one sentence.
  2. Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
  3. Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
  4. Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
  5. Explain where baptism belongs in relation to salvation and why obedience matters after a person believes.
Before you continue

  • Where does belief occur in relation to baptism?
  • What does the passage teach baptism means or pictures?
  • What should a believer do because Christ commanded baptism?
KEY TRUTH

Baptism is an early step into a lifetime of doctrine, fellowship, prayer, service, and obedience in the local church.
