Why Wait? Take the First Step of Obedience
You now know what baptism is, who should be baptized, what it pictures, and why it does not save. The final question is personal: if you have believed on Christ and have not been biblically baptized, what are you waiting for?
- Read the primary Bible passages carefully and in context.
- Compare Scripture with Scripture before drawing the conclusion.
- State the main truth in plain words you could explain to someone else.
- Complete the Quick Checks and guided study before moving on.
Why tarriest thou?
Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
The language is urgent. Once the matter is understood, needless delay does not improve obedience.
What if I was baptized before I believed?
Acts 19:3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
Acts 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
These men had experienced an earlier baptism connected to John's ministry, but after the truth concerning Christ was clarified, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. If your earlier baptism happened before personal faith in Christ, you can now follow the believer's-baptism pattern knowingly.
What if I am nervous?
Nervousness is normal. Baptism is public, and public obedience can feel uncomfortable. The answer is not to wait until you feel fearless. The answer is to let Christ's command be bigger than your embarrassment.
You do not need to give a long speech. You do not need to understand every doctrine in the Bible. You do need to know that you have believed on Jesus Christ for eternal life and that you now want to obey Him.
What should I do next?
- Tell your pastor or church leader that you have trusted Christ and want to be baptized.
- Ask any remaining questions before the baptism.
- Set a date rather than leaving the decision indefinite.
- Invite family or friends if you want them to witness your public identification with Christ.
- After baptism, keep walking in newness of life through Scripture, prayer, church, service, and gospel witness.
Baptism is the beginning of visible discipleship
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Baptism is a beautiful first public step of obedience after salvation. It says: Christ saved me. I belong to Him. I believe the gospel. I want to follow Him.
Compare Scripture with Scripture
Scripture trail: Acts 22:16 • Acts 19:3 • Acts 19:4 • Acts 19:5 • Romans 6:4 • Acts 22:16, Acts 19:3, Acts 19:4, Acts 19:5 • Matthew 28:19-20 • Acts 2:41
Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.
Think it through
- What happens before water baptism in the passages, and what happens after it?
- What does baptism picture or publicly identify without making the water the cause of salvation?
- How would you explain both truths strongly: baptism matters greatly, and baptism does not purchase eternal life?
Teach it back
Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize Why Wait? Take the First Step of Obedience in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.
Slow down and work the text
Reopen Acts 22:16, Acts 19:3, Acts 19:4, Acts 19:5. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.
- Write the main claim of Why Wait? Take the First Step of Obedience in one sentence.
- Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
- Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
- Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
- Explain where baptism belongs in relation to salvation and why obedience matters after a person believes.
If you have believed on the Lord Jesus Christ and have not been biblically baptized, make the decision to obey Christ. Talk with your pastor and take the next step.
- Can you explain why salvation comes before baptism?
- Can you show immersion from Scripture?
- Can you explain the death-burial-resurrection picture?
- Can you explain why baptism is a great work but not a saving work?
- Can you compare Acts 10 with difficult baptism passages?
- If you need to be baptized, what concrete step will you take next?
