LESSON 10 OF 10

How to Explain the Gospel Clearly

25 min Assurance and Gospel Clarity 3 Quick Checks
Lesson purpose

This final lesson turns the doctrine of the previous lessons into a complete gospel presentation. The aim is to explain Scripture clearly enough that another person can understand the problem of sin, the person and work of Christ, and the promise of eternal life by faith.

In this lesson

  • Learn a complete Scripture-centered gospel framework.
  • Practice transitions from one truth to the next.
  • Learn questions that reveal understanding without manipulation.
  • See common mistakes that obscure the gospel.
  • Know what to teach after someone believes.

Step 1: Establish that every person has sinned

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Begin with the universal problem: all have sinned. Explain the same need every sinner has before God, including your own need for the Savior.

A helpful transition is: “The Bible says every one of us has sinned. The question is what sin earns and why we need to be saved.”

Step 2: Explain the consequence of sin

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Explain the words rather than racing past them. A wage is earned. Sin earns death. Revelation identifies the lake of fire as the second death. This establishes why salvation is necessary.

Then notice the second half of Romans 6:23. The verse itself moves from the problem to the answer: the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Step 3: Present Jesus Christ as the Savior

Explain who Jesus Christ is: the Son of God, God manifest in the flesh, the sinless Savior.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Give enough truth for the listener to understand that Jesus Christ is the Savior God gave: the eternal Son who came in the flesh.

Step 4: Explain Christ's death, burial, and resurrection

1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

1 Corinthians 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Emphasize the words for our sins and for us. Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again.

A useful question is: “According to these verses, what did Christ do about our sin?” Give the person time to answer. Gospel conversations should involve understanding, not pressure.

Step 5: Explain that eternal life is a gift, not a reward for works

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

This is a good place to ask what the person is currently trusting. Ephesians 2:8-9 teaches that salvation is by grace through faith and not of works. Direct the listener's confidence to Christ and His finished work.

Step 6: Give the Bible's direct condition—believe

Acts 16:30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Give the condition plainly: believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Explain that faith means relying on Christ as the Savior.

Step 7: Explain that the life Christ gives is eternal

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Many people have been taught that salvation lasts only as long as they remain good enough. That changes everlasting life into temporary life. Show the promise plainly: the believer hath everlasting life, shall not come into condemnation, and is passed from death unto life.

Use questions to check understanding

Helpful questions reveal what the listener understood. For example:

  • “According to the Bible, have all people sinned?”
  • “What does sin earn?”
  • “What did Jesus Christ do for our sins?”
  • “Is eternal life a gift or something we earn?”
  • “What did Paul and Silas tell the jailer to do to be saved?”
  • “If Christ gives everlasting life, can it honestly be called everlasting if it disappears later?”
  • “What are you trusting right now to get you to heaven?”

End with the biblical condition: believe

Keep the conclusion of the gospel presentation centered on the same condition Scripture gives: believe on Jesus Christ. A person may pray after believing, thank God, express faith, ask questions, or speak to God in his own words. Salvation itself is received by believing on Christ.

End by asking what the listener believes about Christ and what he is trusting for eternal life. Let the Scriptures you have explained carry the weight of the invitation.

Give the Word room to work

Read the verses, explain them clearly, ask whether the person understands, and answer objections honestly. The Holy Ghost uses the Word of God. A faithful gospel conversation values understanding and truth over pressure or a rushed response.

If the person remains unconvinced, leave the conversation respectfully and faithfully. The goal is to preach the gospel clearly and give the person the truth of Scripture.

After someone believes

Once a person has believed on Christ, begin teaching Christian growth without turning growth into a retroactive condition of salvation. Encourage the new believer to be baptized, read the Bible, pray, attend a sound local church, learn doctrine, obey God's commands, and tell others about Christ. Those are matters of discipleship and obedience after salvation.

FOUNDATIONS MASTERY

Compare Scripture with Scripture

Scripture trail: Romans 3:23 • Romans 6:23 • Revelation 20:14 • Revelation 20:15 • John 1:1 • John 1:14 • 1 Corinthians 15:3 • 1 Corinthians 15:4 • John 3:16

Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.

Think it through

  1. Which words in these passages state what God has done, and which words state what the sinner must believe?
  2. Where does the text place works, religious rituals, or human merit in relation to receiving eternal life?
  3. Could you use these passages to explain the gospel clearly without adding another saving condition?

Teach it back

Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize How to Explain the Gospel Clearly in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.

STUDY IT FOR YOURSELF

Slow down and work the text

Reopen Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Revelation 20:14, Revelation 20:15. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.

  1. Write the main claim of How to Explain the Gospel Clearly in one sentence.
  2. Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
  3. Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
  4. Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
  5. State clearly what a sinner must believe to be saved, and keep works or religious rituals out of the saving condition.
COURSE SUMMARY

You need salvation because you have sinned. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for your sins, was buried, and rose again. Eternal life is God's gift, received by believing on Jesus Christ, not by works. The believer has everlasting life and can know it on the authority of God's Word.

Final review

  • Can you explain why every person needs salvation using Scripture?
  • Can you explain who Jesus Christ is?
  • Can you state the death, burial, and resurrection clearly?
  • Can you explain why salvation is by faith and not works?
  • Can you explain why baptism, reform, church membership, and prayer are not additional conditions for eternal life?
  • Can you show from Scripture that eternal life is secure?
  • Can you present the gospel in a clear order without pressuring someone into a ritual response?
