Eternal Life Means Eternal
When Jesus gives everlasting life, He gives life that lasts forever. This lesson builds eternal security from the direct promises of Christ and the sealing work of the Holy Ghost.
- Study the present possession of everlasting life.
- See Christ's promise that the believer shall not come into condemnation.
- See that Christ will lose none of those given to Him.
- Study the security of Christ's sheep and the sealing of the Spirit.
The believer has everlasting life now
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
This verse contains three great assurances. The believer hath everlasting life. He shall not come into condemnation. He is passed from death unto life. Those statements describe a completed change of position.
Christ will lose nothing entrusted to Him
John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
John 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
John 6:39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Christ says He will lose nothing of what the Father has given Him. He promises to raise the believer at the last day. The security of salvation rests in His keeping power.
Christ's sheep shall never perish
John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
John 10:30 I and my Father are one.
Jesus says His sheep shall never perish. Their security rests in His hand and the Father's hand. The strength of salvation is the strength of the Savior.
The believer is sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise
Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Ephesians 1:14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
After believing, the believer is sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. The Spirit is described as the earnest of our inheritance until redemption. God seals those who believe.
God remains faithful even when we fail
2 Timothy 2:13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
Christians can fail. They can become weak, fearful, disobedient, and inconsistent. Those failures matter and may bring chastening, loss, broken fellowship, or earthly consequences. God's faithfulness remains, and salvation rests on His promise.
Nothing can separate the believer from God's love in Christ
Romans 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Romans 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The list is intentionally comprehensive. Death cannot separate. Life cannot separate. Present things cannot separate. Future things cannot separate. No created thing can separate the believer from the love of God in Christ.
Eternal security leads to grateful obedience
A saved person should obey God because he belongs to God, because sin is destructive, because fellowship matters, because God chastens His children, and because our lives should honor Christ. Obedience belongs to discipleship and Christian growth, while eternal life rests on Christ's promise and keeping power.
Compare Scripture with Scripture
Scripture trail: John 5:24 • John 6:37 • John 6:38 • John 6:39 • John 6:40 • John 10:27 • John 10:28 • John 10:29 • John 3:16
Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.
Think it through
- Which words in these passages state what God has done, and which words state what the sinner must believe?
- Where does the text place works, religious rituals, or human merit in relation to receiving eternal life?
- Could you use these passages to explain the gospel clearly without adding another saving condition?
Teach it back
Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize Eternal Life Means Eternal in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.
Slow down and work the text
Reopen John 5:24, John 6:37, John 6:38, John 6:39. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.
- Write the main claim of Eternal Life Means Eternal in one sentence.
- Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
- Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
- Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
- State clearly what a sinner must believe to be saved, and keep works or religious rituals out of the saving condition.
The believer is secure because Christ gives everlasting life, promises that His sheep shall never perish, loses none who belong to Him, and seals believers with the Holy Spirit of promise. Salvation is kept by God.
- What three assurances appear in John 5:24?
- What does Jesus say He will lose in John 6:39?
- What does John 10:28 promise about Christ's sheep?
- What happens after believing according to Ephesians 1:13?
- How should eternal security affect the way we distinguish salvation from Christian obedience?
