Walk in the Spirit
Understand the daily conflict between flesh and Spirit. Learn why Christian growth is not sinless perfection but an increasingly deliberate walk that yields to the Holy Spirit and produces His fruit.
- Recognize the conflict with the flesh.
- Understand the fruit of the Spirit as character, not performance.
- Make choices that agree with the Spirit rather than feeding the flesh.
Walk in the Spirit
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
The command assumes a real choice in daily life. The believer still has fleshly desires, but he is not required to obey them. Walking in the Spirit is active dependence and obedience.
This verse does not teach that a believer reaches a state where temptation disappears. It teaches a path through the conflict: walk in the Spirit rather than arranging life around the lusts of the flesh.
Know what the Spirit produces
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Galatians 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
The fruit listed here is largely character. A person can be talented, energetic, and visible while still lacking patience, gentleness, self-control, or love.
Fruit grows over time, but growth is not passive. The believer should identify weak areas honestly and cooperate with what Scripture teaches. Temperance, for example, becomes visible in real decisions about appetites and impulses.
Live like someone who belongs to Christ
Galatians 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
Galatians 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Verse 25 distinguishes life from walk. The believer lives in the Spirit and is therefore told to walk in the Spirit. Position and practice are related but not identical.
This protects us from two errors: pretending behavior does not matter, and pretending behavior creates spiritual life. God gives life; then He commands the believer to walk consistently with that life.
- Which fruit of the Spirit is easiest to imitate outwardly without actually possessing inwardly?
- What practical choices “feed” the flesh, and what choices help you walk in the Spirit?
Compare Scripture with Scripture
Scripture trail: Galatians 5:16 • Galatians 5:22 • Galatians 5:23 • Galatians 5:24 • Galatians 5:25 • Galatians 5:16, Galatians 5:22, Galatians 5:23, Galatians 5:24 • 1 Peter 2:2 • Ephesians 4:14-16
Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.
Think it through
- Which part of this lesson concerns the free gift of salvation, and which part concerns discipleship after salvation?
- What specific command, habit, warning, or character quality should change the way a believer lives?
- What would this truth look like if practiced faithfully for ten, twenty, or forty years?
Teach it back
Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize Walk in the Spirit in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.
Slow down and work the text
Reopen Galatians 5:16, Galatians 5:22, Galatians 5:23, Galatians 5:24. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.
- Write the main claim of Walk in the Spirit in one sentence.
- Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
- Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
- Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
- Name one concrete habit, decision, relationship, or responsibility that should change because of this truth, then write the first step you will take.
The Christian life includes a real conflict with the flesh. Growth means learning to walk in the Spirit so His character increasingly governs real choices.
