LESSON 4 OF 24

Learn Biblical Love

17 min 3 Quick Checks
Lesson purpose

Replace sentimental definitions of love with the Bible’s demanding picture of charity. Christian love is patient, truthful, sacrificial, and practiced toward real people.

In this lesson

  • Learn the character of charity.
  • See why love and truth belong together.
  • Practice love when people are difficult, not only when relationships are easy.

Love is patient and kind

1 Corinthians 13:4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

1 Corinthians 13:5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

These verses move love out of the realm of slogans. Love is tested by delay, inconvenience, jealousy, irritation, and the temptation to make everything about self.

“Seeketh not her own” is especially challenging. Mature love does not mean having no needs or boundaries, but it refuses to make self-interest the controlling principle in every relationship.

Love rejoices in truth

1 Corinthians 13:6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

1 Corinthians 13:7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Biblical love is not moral indifference. It does not celebrate iniquity in order to appear kind. Love and truth are friends.

At the same time, truth can be used harshly. Love affects tone, patience, timing, and motive. The goal of correction should be restoration and good, not the pleasure of proving someone wrong.

Christ commanded love among His disciples

John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

The church gives us repeated opportunities to obey this command because church contains actual people with differences, weaknesses, personalities, and needs.

Love becomes visible in patience, hospitality, generosity, encouragement, forgiveness, practical help, truthful speech, and faithfulness when relationships are inconvenient.

Think it through

  • Which phrase in 1 Corinthians 13 most challenges the way you respond when irritated?
  • How can truth be spoken without using “truth” as an excuse for cruelty?
FOUNDATIONS MASTERY

Compare Scripture with Scripture

Scripture trail: 1 Corinthians 13:4 • 1 Corinthians 13:5 • 1 Corinthians 13:6 • 1 Corinthians 13:7 • John 13:34 • John 13:35 • 1 Corinthians 13:4, 1 Corinthians 13:5, 1 Corinthians 13:6, 1 Corinthians 13:7 • 1 Peter 2:2

Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.

Think it through

  1. Which part of this lesson concerns the free gift of salvation, and which part concerns discipleship after salvation?
  2. What specific command, habit, warning, or character quality should change the way a believer lives?
  3. What would this truth look like if practiced faithfully for ten, twenty, or forty years?

Teach it back

Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize Learn Biblical Love in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.

STUDY IT FOR YOURSELF

Slow down and work the text

Reopen 1 Corinthians 13:4, 1 Corinthians 13:5, 1 Corinthians 13:6, 1 Corinthians 13:7. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.

  1. Write the main claim of Learn Biblical Love in one sentence.
  2. Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
  3. Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
  4. Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
  5. Name one concrete habit, decision, relationship, or responsibility that should change because of this truth, then write the first step you will take.
KEY TRUTH

Biblical love is not vague niceness. It is patient, truthful, selfless, enduring action toward real people, especially within the body of Christ.
