LESSON 6 OF 24

Trials Can Mature You

18 min 3 Quick Checks
Lesson purpose

Learn to view trials through more than the question “How do I get out?” God can use pressure to produce patience, experience, hope, and greater maturity.

In this lesson

  • Understand why James says to count trials with joy.
  • See patience as something developed under pressure.
  • Refuse shallow explanations that make every trial a punishment.

Trials test faith

James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

James 1:3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

James 1:4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

James does not say the trial feels joyful. He says to count it with joy because of what the testing can produce. Perspective looks beyond the immediate pain to the work patience is doing.

“Let patience have her perfect work” also warns against escaping every difficulty prematurely. Some maturity is formed only by staying faithful while the situation remains hard.

Tribulation can build a chain of growth

Romans 5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

Romans 5:4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Paul describes a process: tribulation, patience, experience, hope. “Experience” here carries the idea of proven character. Pressure reveals and develops what easy seasons can leave untested.

This is one reason older faithful Christians can become such a help. They have often watched God carry them through losses, uncertainty, illness, disappointment, and change. Tested faith can speak with weight.

Do not assume every hardship is punishment

John 9:3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

The disciples wanted a simple blame equation. Jesus rejected it in that case. Not every hardship can be explained by identifying a particular sin.

Sometimes suffering is a consequence of foolishness; sometimes it is chastening; sometimes it is persecution; sometimes it is ordinary life in a fallen world; sometimes Scripture reveals a larger purpose. Maturity resists simplistic claims when God has not told us the reason.

Think it through

  • What is the difference between feeling joy about pain and counting a trial with joy because of what God can produce?
  • Why is it dangerous to confidently explain the cause of another person’s suffering when Scripture has not revealed it?
FOUNDATIONS MASTERY

Compare Scripture with Scripture

Scripture trail: James 1:2 • James 1:3 • James 1:4 • Romans 5:3 • Romans 5:4 • Romans 5:5 • John 9:3 • James 1:2, James 1:3, James 1:4, Romans 5:3 • 1 Peter 2:2

Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.

Think it through

  1. Which part of this lesson concerns the free gift of salvation, and which part concerns discipleship after salvation?
  2. What specific command, habit, warning, or character quality should change the way a believer lives?
  3. What would this truth look like if practiced faithfully for ten, twenty, or forty years?

Teach it back

Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize Trials Can Mature You in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.

STUDY IT FOR YOURSELF

Slow down and work the text

Reopen James 1:2, James 1:3, James 1:4, Romans 5:3. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.

  1. Write the main claim of Trials Can Mature You in one sentence.
  2. Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
  3. Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
  4. Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
  5. Name one concrete habit, decision, relationship, or responsibility that should change because of this truth, then write the first step you will take.
KEY TRUTH

Trials are not automatically evidence that God has abandoned you. Faithful endurance under pressure can produce patience, proven character, hope, and maturity.
