Work Hard and Be Dependable
See ordinary work as part of Christian testimony. Faithfulness at home, on the job, at church, and in commitments is spiritual because it reveals character.
- Work heartily even when nobody is watching.
- Value quiet dependability.
- Let work support a good testimony toward outsiders.
Work as unto the Lord
Colossians 3:23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
Colossians 3:24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
The audience changes the work. If you work only when a supervisor notices, your standard rises and falls with visibility. Working “as to the Lord” gives hidden work meaning.
This does not make every employer right or every work situation healthy. It does mean Christians should be known for honesty, effort, competence, and follow-through where obedience to God allows.
Learn quiet faithfulness
1 Thessalonians 4:11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
1 Thessalonians 4:12 That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.
There is spiritual dignity in doing your own business and working faithfully. Christianity does not require every useful life to be publicly visible.
Dependability builds trust slowly. Showing up, being on time, finishing tasks, keeping promises, paying what you owe, and telling the truth may seem ordinary, but those habits strengthen testimony.
Do not confuse busyness with faithfulness
Proverbs 22:29 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
Diligence is not the same as frantic activity. A diligent person gives careful effort to responsibilities and develops skill over time.
A believer can be busy with many optional activities while neglecting spouse, children, employer, church duties, health, or basic commitments. Faithfulness begins with responsibilities God has actually placed in front of you.
- Where has busyness become an excuse for neglecting a real responsibility?
- What would make you more dependable to the people who currently rely on you?
Compare Scripture with Scripture
Scripture trail: Colossians 3:23 • Colossians 3:24 • 1 Thessalonians 4:11 • 1 Thessalonians 4:12 • Proverbs 22:29 • Colossians 3:23, Colossians 3:24, 1 Thessalonians 4:11, 1 Thessalonians 4:12 • Ephesians 2:8-10 • Titus 3:8
Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.
Think it through
- Which part of this lesson concerns the free gift of salvation, and which part concerns discipleship after salvation?
- What specific command, habit, warning, or character quality should change the way a believer lives?
- What would this truth look like if practiced faithfully for ten, twenty, or forty years?
Teach it back
Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize Work Hard and Be Dependable in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.
Slow down and work the text
Reopen Colossians 3:23, Colossians 3:24, 1 Thessalonians 4:11, 1 Thessalonians 4:12. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.
- Write the main claim of Work Hard and Be Dependable in one sentence.
- Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
- Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
- Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
- Name one concrete habit, decision, relationship, or responsibility that should change because of this truth, then write the first step you will take.
Ordinary dependability is spiritual. Work heartily, handle responsibilities honestly, develop skill, and let your daily labor support rather than contradict your Christian testimony.
