Why Soul Winning Matters
Jesus Christ gave His churches a mission to preach the gospel. Soul winning is not salesmanship and it is not forcing a decision. It is lovingly carrying the good news of Christ to people who need to hear and believe it.
- See the Great Commission as a continuing responsibility.
- Understand that the gospel, not our personality, is the power of God unto salvation.
- Learn why every believer can have a part in reaching people.
Christ commanded the gospel to be preached
Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
The command begins with going and teaching. Baptism and lifelong discipleship follow. The order matters: people first hear the truth, then those who believe are baptized and taught to follow Christ.
The gospel itself is the power
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
You do not have to manufacture power through pressure, volume, personality, or cleverness. The gospel is God’s message, and salvation is promised to the one who believes. Our responsibility is clarity and faithfulness.
A witness carries a message
Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
A witness tells what is true. You do not have to know every answer in the Bible before you can tell someone the gospel. You do need to understand the gospel well enough to explain it accurately.
Compare Scripture with Scripture
Scripture trail: Mark 16:15 • Matthew 28:19 • Matthew 28:20 • Romans 1:16 • Acts 1:8 • Mark 16:15, Matthew 28:19, Matthew 28:20, Romans 1:16 • Matthew 28:18-20 • Romans 10:13-17
Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.
Think it through
- Which verse would you actually open first if a real person were confused about this subject, and why?
- What question could you ask after reading the verse to discover whether the hearer understood it?
- Explain the truth aloud in plain language while keeping belief in Christ—not works, reform, baptism, or prayer—as the saving condition.
Teach it back
Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize Why Soul Winning Matters in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.
Slow down and work the text
Reopen Mark 16:15, Matthew 28:19, Matthew 28:20, Romans 1:16. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.
- Write the main claim of Why Soul Winning Matters in one sentence.
- Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
- Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
- Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
- Explain this truth aloud as though you were speaking to a real person who has never heard it clearly before.
- Which verse would you open to explain this truth?
- What simple question would reveal whether the hearer understood it?
- Can you explain the truth clearly without pressure or added saving conditions?
Soul winning is the work of clearly preaching Christ so that people can hear the gospel and believe. We carry the message; God gives the increase.
