The Wages of Sin and the Second Death
After establishing sin, explain its consequence. Scripture connects sin with death, judgment, and the second death, while also introducing God’s gift of eternal life.
- Show the wage sin earns.
- Explain the second death from Revelation 20.
- Contrast an earned wage with a free gift.
Sin earns death
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
A wage is earned. Sin earns death. Notice that the same verse immediately contrasts the wage with a gift. That contrast becomes important when you explain salvation.
The Bible calls the lake of fire the second death
Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Do not use hell merely to shock someone emotionally. Read what Scripture says and explain it plainly. The danger is real, which is one reason the gospel matters so much.
The verse already points to hope
Romans 6:23 does not stop after “death.” It says, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. The gospel moves from what sin earns to what God gives.
Ask, “What is the difference between a wage and a gift?” That simple question often makes grace easier to understand.
Compare Scripture with Scripture
Scripture trail: Romans 6:23 • Revelation 20:14 • Revelation 20:15 • Romans 6:23, Revelation 20:14, Revelation 20:15 • Psalm 119:9-11 • Romans 6:11-14 • 1 Corinthians 10:13 • Galatians 5:16-25
Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.
Think it through
- Which verse would you actually open first if a real person were confused about this subject, and why?
- What question could you ask after reading the verse to discover whether the hearer understood it?
- Explain the truth aloud in plain language while keeping belief in Christ—not works, reform, baptism, or prayer—as the saving condition.
Teach it back
Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize The Wages of Sin and the Second Death in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.
Slow down and work the text
Reopen Romans 6:23, Revelation 20:14, Revelation 20:15. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.
- Write the main claim of The Wages of Sin and the Second Death in one sentence.
- Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
- Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
- Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
- Explain this truth aloud as though you were speaking to a real person who has never heard it clearly before.
- Which verse would you open to explain this truth?
- What simple question would reveal whether the hearer understood it?
- Can you explain the truth clearly without pressure or added saving conditions?
Sin earns death, but eternal life is God’s gift through Jesus Christ. The contrast between wage and gift prepares the hearer to understand grace.
