After Someone Believes
The gospel conversation is not the end of Christian growth. Once someone believes, help him understand assurance, baptism, church, Bible reading, prayer, and the beginning of discipleship without turning those things into retroactive conditions of salvation.
- Confirm what the new believer is trusting.
- Give immediate assurance from Scripture.
- Point toward baptism and church as next steps of obedience.
Ask what changed
After the person says he believes, ask, “What are you trusting now to get you to heaven?” You are not trying to make him pass an exam. You want to hear whether his confidence is now in Jesus Christ rather than his works.
Show assurance from God’s promise
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Do not teach the new believer to stare at his feelings. Point back to the promise of Christ.
Teach the next steps in the right order
Encourage baptism, faithful church attendance, Bible reading, prayer, Christian fellowship, service, giving, and telling others about Christ. Say clearly: these are matters of obedience and growth after salvation. They do not prove that faith was real and they do not keep eternal life from expiring.
Compare Scripture with Scripture
Scripture trail: John 5:24 • Mark 16:15 • Romans 3:23 • Romans 6:23 • Acts 16:30-31 • 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 • Romans 10:17
Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.
Think it through
- Which verse would you actually open first if a real person were confused about this subject, and why?
- What question could you ask after reading the verse to discover whether the hearer understood it?
- Explain the truth aloud in plain language while keeping belief in Christ—not works, reform, baptism, or prayer—as the saving condition.
Teach it back
Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize After Someone Believes in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.
Slow down and work the text
Reopen John 5:24. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.
- Write the main claim of After Someone Believes in one sentence.
- Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
- Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
- Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
- Explain this truth aloud as though you were speaking to a real person who has never heard it clearly before.
- Which verse would you open to explain this truth?
- What simple question would reveal whether the hearer understood it?
- Can you explain the truth clearly without pressure or added saving conditions?
After someone believes, ground him in assurance and begin discipleship. Keep salvation by faith distinct from the good works that should follow.
