Eternal Life Really Is Eternal
A soul winner should not leave a new believer thinking salvation is a temporary probation. Jesus promises everlasting life, freedom from condemnation, and a completed passage from death unto life.
- Use John 5:24 to show present possession and security.
- Explain why everlasting life cannot honestly mean temporary life.
- Help the hearer place assurance in God’s promise rather than personal performance.
Three assurances in one verse
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Notice the tenses: hath everlasting life; shall not come into condemnation; is passed from death unto life. This is strong assurance for the believer.
God wants believers to know
1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
Assurance is not arrogance when it rests on God’s testimony. A person can know because God has spoken.
Do not turn discipleship into a hidden second condition
Good works matter after salvation, but they are not the price of keeping eternal life. Baptism, church faithfulness, prayer, growth, and obedience are important Christian responsibilities. They must not be smuggled into the gospel as conditions for receiving or retaining the gift.
Compare Scripture with Scripture
Scripture trail: John 5:24 • 1 John 5:13 • John 5:24, 1 John 5:13 • John 3:16 • Acts 16:30-31 • Romans 4:4-5 • Ephesians 2:8-10 • 1 John 5:11-13
Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.
Think it through
- Which verse would you actually open first if a real person were confused about this subject, and why?
- What question could you ask after reading the verse to discover whether the hearer understood it?
- Explain the truth aloud in plain language while keeping belief in Christ—not works, reform, baptism, or prayer—as the saving condition.
Teach it back
Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize Eternal Life Really Is Eternal in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.
Slow down and work the text
Reopen John 5:24, 1 John 5:13. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.
- Write the main claim of Eternal Life Really Is Eternal in one sentence.
- Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
- Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
- Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
- Explain this truth aloud as though you were speaking to a real person who has never heard it clearly before.
- Which verse would you open to explain this truth?
- What simple question would reveal whether the hearer understood it?
- Can you explain the truth clearly without pressure or added saving conditions?
When Christ gives everlasting life, He gives everlasting life. Teach the new believer to rest assurance on God’s promise, not on changing feelings or performance.
