When Someone Says No
Not every person will listen, understand, or believe. Learn to respond to rejection without anger, despair, manipulation, or pretending you can control the result.
- Respect a clear refusal.
- Understand planting, watering, and God giving the increase.
- Leave the door open when possible.
You cannot force belief
If someone clearly says he does not want to continue, respect that. You can offer a tract, invitation, or simple closing statement, but do not trap someone in a conversation he has ended.
Pressure may create an outward response, but it cannot create faith.
God gives the increase
1 Corinthians 3:6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
1 Corinthians 3:7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
Some conversations plant. Others water. Occasionally you are present when someone believes. Do not despise faithful seed sowing because it did not produce an immediate visible result.
Leave with grace
Thank the person for his time. If appropriate, say, “If you ever want to talk more about this, we would be glad to.” A respectful ending may make a future conversation possible.
Compare Scripture with Scripture
Scripture trail: 1 Corinthians 3:6 • 1 Corinthians 3:7 • 1 Corinthians 3:6, 1 Corinthians 3:7 • Mark 16:15 • Romans 3:23 • Romans 6:23 • Acts 16:30-31 • 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.
Think it through
- Which verse would you actually open first if a real person were confused about this subject, and why?
- What question could you ask after reading the verse to discover whether the hearer understood it?
- Explain the truth aloud in plain language while keeping belief in Christ—not works, reform, baptism, or prayer—as the saving condition.
Teach it back
Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize When Someone Says No in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.
Slow down and work the text
Reopen 1 Corinthians 3:6, 1 Corinthians 3:7. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.
- Write the main claim of When Someone Says No in one sentence.
- Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
- Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
- Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
- Explain this truth aloud as though you were speaking to a real person who has never heard it clearly before.
- Which verse would you open to explain this truth?
- What simple question would reveal whether the hearer understood it?
- Can you explain the truth clearly without pressure or added saving conditions?
You are responsible to preach faithfully, not to manufacture results. Plant and water the Word; God gives the increase.
