Christ Died, Was Buried, and Rose Again
The historical heart of the gospel is the finished work of Jesus Christ: He died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.
- Learn Paul’s gospel summary.
- Explain substitution: Christ died for our sins.
- Keep the bodily resurrection central.
Paul gives the gospel plainly
1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
1 Corinthians 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
These verses give a compact gospel core: death for our sins, burial, and resurrection. Do not let a gospel presentation become so complicated that these facts disappear.
Christ died for us
Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
The words for us matter. We are not saved by admiring Christ’s example from a distance. We need His saving work on our behalf.
The resurrection is not optional
A presentation that stops at the cross is incomplete. Christ rose again. The resurrection declares that the Savior who died is alive. Ask the hearer to state back the three events: He died for our sins, He was buried, and He rose again.
Compare Scripture with Scripture
Scripture trail: 1 Corinthians 15:3 • 1 Corinthians 15:4 • Romans 5:8 • 1 Corinthians 15:3, 1 Corinthians 15:4, Romans 5:8 • Mark 16:15 • Romans 3:23 • Romans 6:23 • Acts 16:30-31
Do not rush past the references. Open them, read the surrounding verses, and make the Bible carry the weight of the conclusion.
Think it through
- Which verse would you actually open first if a real person were confused about this subject, and why?
- What question could you ask after reading the verse to discover whether the hearer understood it?
- Explain the truth aloud in plain language while keeping belief in Christ—not works, reform, baptism, or prayer—as the saving condition.
Teach it back
Without looking at the lesson explanation, summarize Christ Died, Was Buried, and Rose Again in two or three sentences and support your explanation from Scripture. If you cannot explain it simply yet, return to the passages and work through them again.
Slow down and work the text
Reopen 1 Corinthians 15:3, 1 Corinthians 15:4, Romans 5:8. Read enough before and after each verse to see the setting. Do not settle for remembering a slogan when you can inspect the wording for yourself.
- Write the main claim of Christ Died, Was Buried, and Rose Again in one sentence.
- Underline or write down the exact words in the passages that support that claim.
- Compare at least two of the passages. What truth becomes clearer when they are read together?
- Ask what could be misunderstood if one phrase were isolated from its context.
- Explain this truth aloud as though you were speaking to a real person who has never heard it clearly before.
- Which verse would you open to explain this truth?
- What simple question would reveal whether the hearer understood it?
- Can you explain the truth clearly without pressure or added saving conditions?
The gospel centers on what Christ did for us: He died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day.
