The Word Became Flesh
John begins by telling us who Jesus Christ is before describing what he did.
Before and during your reading
Notice what John says about the Word in verses 1–5 and 14. Then follow the testimony of John the Baptist and the first disciples. The chapter identifies Jesus as the eternal Word, the Lamb of God, and the one in whom life is found. Pay particular attention to the distinction between receiving Christ by believing on his name and merely knowing facts about him.
Questions to consider
- What does John say about the Word before the world was made?
- According to verses 12–13, how do people become the sons of God?
- How does John the Baptist direct attention away from himself and toward Jesus?
