His First Miracle and His Father's House
Two public events reveal something about Jesus' authority and purpose.
Before and during your reading
At Cana, Jesus turns water into wine, and John calls it the beginning of his miracles. Observe how the disciples respond. At Jerusalem, Jesus drives merchants from the temple and speaks of raising the temple of his body in three days. The disciples understand that saying more fully after his resurrection. John's account invites you to notice what witnesses understood at the time and what became clear afterward.
Questions to consider
- What did the miracle at Cana manifest, and how did the disciples respond?
- Why was Jesus displeased with the activity in the temple?
- What did Jesus mean by the temple he would raise in three days?
