I Am the Resurrection and the Life
Jesus meets grieving sisters and raises Lazarus from the dead.
Before and during your reading
Martha and Mary both tell Jesus that Lazarus would not have died if he had been there. Notice Jesus' compassion and the distinction between his knowing what he would do and the grief he witnessed. Before raising Lazarus, he explains who he is and asks Martha whether she believes. The miracle leads many to faith, but it also intensifies the authorities' plans against him.
Questions to consider
- What does Martha confess about Jesus before Lazarus is raised?
- What does Jesus teach about resurrection and life in verses 25–26?
- How do the different witnesses respond to the miracle?
