The King Approaches His Hour
Jesus' approaching death brings both worship and opposition into view.
Before and during your reading
Notice Mary's costly act of devotion, the triumphal entry, and the Greeks who wish to see Jesus. Jesus then speaks of his coming death using the picture of a grain of wheat falling into the ground. John also explains the continuing unbelief of many who saw his miracles. Follow how glory, judgment, light, and belief are connected throughout the chapter, without confusing the people's expectations with Jesus' stated mission.
Questions to consider
- What does Jesus say about Mary's act of anointing?
- How does Jesus describe his approaching death in verses 23–24 and 32–33?
- Why is the response of the people more complicated than the excitement at his arrival?
Put your study into practice
Compare the praise at Jesus' entry with the resistance described later in the chapter.
