My Lord and My God
The risen Jesus appears to his followers, and John explains why he wrote his Gospel.
Before and during your reading
Begin with the empty tomb and notice what Mary Magdalene and the disciples initially understand. Jesus then appears to Mary and later to disciples gathered behind shut doors. Thomas is absent at first; when Jesus returns, Thomas confesses him as Lord and God. The final verses supply John's own statement of purpose: that readers might believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and have life through his name.
Questions to consider
- How do Mary's understanding and the disciples' understanding change?
- What does Thomas confess after seeing the risen Jesus?
- According to verses 30–31, why did John write these signs?
Put your study into practice
Write John's stated purpose for his Gospel in your own words, without adding extra requirements.
