Life and Judgment in the Son
Jesus heals on the sabbath and describes his relationship with the Father.
Before and during your reading
Begin with the healing at the pool of Bethesda. Then give careful attention to the dispute that follows: Jesus explains his work in relation to the Father's work, his authority to give life, and the witnesses to his identity. Verse 24 is particularly clear about what happens when a person hears his word and believes on him that sent him. Near the end, Jesus challenges people who search the Scriptures yet refuse to come to him.
Questions to consider
- What issue provokes the conflict after the healing?
- What three things does Jesus say are true of the believer in verse 24?
- Which witnesses does Jesus name concerning his identity?
Put your study into practice
Write out the three promises in verse 24 and distinguish each one.
