Ye Must Be Born Again
Jesus explains the new birth and God's promise of everlasting life.
Before and during your reading
Nicodemus approaches Jesus with respect, but Jesus immediately speaks to his need to be born again. Read the conversation carefully: Jesus distinguishes physical birth from birth of the Spirit, recalls the serpent lifted up in the wilderness, and explains the promise made to whosoever believeth in him. The latter part of the chapter records John the Baptist's testimony about Jesus and the necessity of believing on the Son.
Questions to consider
- Why does Nicodemus struggle with Jesus' words about being born again?
- What does Jesus say the person who believes in him has?
- How does the bronze serpent illustration help explain looking to Christ in faith?
