The True Vine
Jesus teaches his disciples about abiding, fruitfulness, love, and opposition.
Before and during your reading
Jesus uses the vine and branches to describe dependence on him. Follow the repeated language of abiding, keeping his words, bearing fruit, and loving one another. The teaching addresses the disciples' relationship with Christ and their appointed service; do not turn its fruit imagery into a rule that works must prove a person was ever saved. The chapter also warns that the world may hate those who belong to Jesus.
Questions to consider
- What does the branch illustration teach about dependence on Christ?
- How does Jesus define his commandment concerning love?
