The Comforter and Coming Joy
Jesus prepares his disciples for persecution, the Spirit's work, and his victory.
Before and during your reading
Jesus warns the disciples that hardship lies ahead so they will not be caught unaware. He explains why his departure is connected to the Comforter's coming and describes the Spirit's work concerning the world and the disciples. Later, sorrow is compared with the joy following a birth. End with Jesus' assurance that they can have peace in him even though the world brings tribulation.
Questions to consider
- Why does Jesus tell the disciples about coming persecution beforehand?
- What does Jesus say the Spirit will do?
- What is the basis for the disciples' peace in the final verse?
