The Servant's Example
Jesus humbles himself before his disciples and prepares them for his departure.
Before and during your reading
Read the foot-washing scene slowly. Peter misunderstands Jesus' action at first, and Jesus gives both an immediate lesson in humble service and words that point beyond the washing itself. John also describes Judas' betrayal and Jesus' command that the disciples love one another. The chapter ends with Peter confidently promising loyalty, followed by Jesus' warning about his denial.
Questions to consider
- Why does Peter first object when Jesus comes to wash his feet?
- What example does Jesus tell the disciples to follow?
- How does the command to love one another relate to their public witness?
